Thehurricane which accompanied the snowfall packed the snow so hard that a wedgeplow was of no more use than a carpetsweeper. In fact, the large double-trackplow which was sent out to buck it,was destroyed by impact with the frozendrifts, and not only this, one engine of thefive which were pushing the plow wasbadly wrecked in the smash, the conduc-tor was killed, and the engineer seriouslyinjured. The destruction wrought in thiscase will give some idea of the resistanceoffered by hard-packed snow.
