Text Appearing Before Image: nsis (H. Allen). The exact relationship of E. propinquus to Eptesicus hilarii (Is.Geoffroy) and other South American species is, however, not soclear. A small colony of E. propinquus was located in a dark corner ofthe attic of an old house at San Pablo, a locality now covered byGatun Lake. The walls of the room had been white-washed andwhen a window was opened the dark color of the bats rendered themconspicuous. A few individuals of Rhogecssa tumida were clingingto rafters nearby. Specimens examined: San Pablo, 3. EPTESICUS FUSCUS MIRADORENSIS (H. Allen) Mirador Brown Bat S[cotophilus] miradorensis H. Allen, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia,1866, p. 287. Type from Mirador, Vera Cruz, Mexico. The Mirador brown bat is one of the larger forms of Vesperti-lionidae occurring in the region under consideration. It is externallysimilar to Eptesicus propinquus, but is decidedly larger, the forearmmeasuring about 50 millimeters in length. It also differs in darkbrown instead of blackish color.

Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 20.—Eptesicus fuscus miradorensis.No. 53784, U. S. Nat. Mus. About nat. size. Eptesicus f. miradorensis was first made known from Panama byBangs (1902, p. 50), who noted a single specimen collected by W. W.Brown, Jr., at Boquete, Chiriqui. Allen (1904, p. 78) lists examplestaken at the same locality by J. H. Batty. This locality on thesouthern slope of the Volcan de Chiriqui, in the western part of therepublic, marks the southern limit of the known range of Eptesicusfuscus. This species in its several forms is one of the most commonin the area to the northward, including the entire United States andadjoining British territory. The skulls of examples from Boquete 2l6 SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTIONS VOL. 69 are slightly larger than in Mexican specimens with which they havebeen compared, but the external dimensions are about the same.Specimens examined : Boquete, 4.1 Genus NYCTERIS BorkhausenThe genus Nycteris is easily recognizable by the continuation ofthe dense body fur o
