Text Appearing Before Image: r Smith served as pro-bate judge of Salt Lake County from1884 to 1889, as selectman of SaltLake County two years, as a memberof the Territorial legislature twoterms, acting as president of the legis-lative council. He has also served asa member of the Territorial Board ofEqualization and as chairman of saidboard for two terms, and as regentof the University of Utah from 1886to 1888. In 1897 he was appointed byGov. Heber M. Wells as a memberof the commission for the Pioneer Ju-bilee; he also served 11 years as amember of the Board of Corrections ofthe Utah Penitentiary, and is now act-ing as chairman of the Utah StateLand Board, under appointment ofGov. George H. Dern. By the foregoingit will be seen that Elias A. Smithhas led a most active life and renderedefficient service to both Church andState. 62 LATTER-DAY SAINT SMITH, William Richard, 2nd pres-ident of the Woodruff Stake of Zion,was born March 21, 1884, at Logan,Cache Co., Utah, the son of IsaacSmith and Harriet Camilla Ensign. Text Appearing After Image: He was raised and received a commonschool education in Logan, and laterattended the Utah Agricultural Col-lege at Logan in 1902-1906 and 1909-1910. Still later he graduated fromthe Ohio State University at Colum-bia, Ohio, receiving a doctors degreein veterinary medicine in June, 1912.Pie again attended the Utah Agri-cultural College in 1922-1923 and re-ceived a B. S. degree from that insti-tution. From his earliest youth Pres.Smith took a lively part in Churchaffairs and was ordained consecutivelyto the offices of Deacon, Teacher andPriest. He was ordained an ElderSept. 12, 1906, by James A. Lieshmanand filled a mission to Germany in1906-1909. He served as secondcounselor in the Woodruff Stake Y.M. M. I. A. in 1923-1924. In 1910(July 28), he married Zina V. Crouchin the Logan Temple, which marriagehas been blessed with two children,namely, Vivian and Helen Jean. Hewas ordained a High Priest by JohnM.
