Summary edit
DescriptionInauguration tablet, St Pancras Gardens - geograph.org.uk - 672524.jpg |
English: Inauguration tablet, St Pancras Gardens The cemetery here was closed for burials in 1854 when lack of space forced the opening of a new cemetery further out; in the 1860's the upheaval to the ground caused by the building of the adjoining railway created outrage. Thomas Hardy assisted the architect Arthur Blomfield in the reorganising of the graves, and wrote a poem about it: The Levelled Churchyard. This tablet marks its re-invention as a public garden in 1891.
In 2002/3 the rebuilding of St Pancras Station disturbed the graves once again and archaeologists used the opportunity to make forensic studies of the human remains. See http://www.britarch.ac.uk/BA/ba88/feat1.shtml for an interesting article of this. |
