In a speech on April 10, 1899, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt told the crowd: "I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife..." In 1902, the Independent Telephone Company started services in Seattle. In 1912, it was absorbed by the Sunset Telephone Company, which was renamed the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1913.
