Summary
editDescriptionIndra and his harpist visit the Buddha in Indrasala Cave.jpg |
English: Artwork from Sikri Yusufzai stupa (3rd-4th century A.D.) of Indra and his harpist (called Pancasikh) visiting the Buddha in Indrasala Cave.
Based on a view from a clearer picture: Pancasikh is holding the instrument with his left hand by the strings on top; the strap which allows to hold the instrument while both hands play is hanging from the front of the instrument. Pancasikh is holding the pick/beater/mallet up in his right hand. The resonator (seen as a thicker section at the bottom of the instrument, runs from the strap leftward and disappears behind Pancasikh. |

In better quality images, this is clearly a strap hanging from the instrument. When worn, it would allow the harper to use both hands while playing.
