| Description |
Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae), Lycoming County, within the McIntyre Wild Area of Loyalsock State Forest. The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on forest and stream ecosystems across eastern North America. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence. I look for the pest whenever I hike through a stand of hemlocks. Lately, it seems, I've encountered it nearly everywhere I go—even at high elevations and in remote, largely inaccessible areas. The trees are sometimes infested not only with the woolly adelgid but also with the hemlock elongate scale (Fiorinia externa Ferris), another exotic insect pest. |
