English: Latin inscription on monumental brass of Wilmota Giffard (1540/1-1581), St Saviour's Church, Tor Mohun (about 2 inches of left side of brass sheared off):
Which may be translated: "Here is buried Wilmota Cary, the wife of George Cary, Esquire, of Cockington, daughter and sole heiress of John Giffard, Esquire, of Yeo, who after she had received from her husband two sons and three daughters she went to sleep in the Lord on the (21st) day of June in the year of our Lord 1581". Wilmota Giffard (1540/1-1581) was the daughter and heiress of John Giffard of Yeo Vale in the parish of Alwington, Devon. She married as her second husband George Cary (1541-1616) of Cockington, Devon, Lord Deputy of Ireland 1603-4. |
