English: Inside the dovecote at Garway, Herefordshire. The stone on the floor is subject to some speculation. Was its purpose simply to provide a bathing/drinking area for the birds, does it cover a well, or is it part of an old cider press?
Over the narrow doorway is a triangular, weathered tympanum with faded inscription istud columbarium factum fuit per Ricardum in 1326: "In the year of our Lord 1326 this dovecote was made by Brother Richard de Biri". Audrey Tapper's Knights Templar & Hospitaller in Herefordshire states "with an internal diameter of 17 feet 6 inches and walls 3 feet 10 inches thick. Arranged around the interior walls, in 19 rows are 666 L-shaped nesting spaces with landing ledges, each large enough for two parent birds and two chicks." |
