English: A letter addressed to Ms. Kimberly Knowles from former Peace Corps Director Loret Miller Ruppe, inviting Ms. Knowles to enter training.
Mrs. Ruppe was the wife of Congressman Philip Ruppe (R-MI), and was a political appointee of President Ronald Reagan. At the time of her appointment, it was widely believed that the Peace Corps may not survive as an agency; by the end of her term she had managed to have the budget increased by 50%, and increased the number of Volunteers serving by 20%. She was also the longest-serving Peace Corps Director. She died of cancer in 1996. |
