Description
English: The Ira Bennett House, 51 Symphony Circle, Buffalo, December 2019. Designed by Franklin W. Caulkins, one of the earliest Buffalo architects of note, the house was built in 1879 on the northwest quadrant of the circle. The architecture is an early example of the Queen Anne style whose most interesting feature is the Eastlake-style woodwork on the large roof gable at left as well as the second-floor "sleeping porch" at right. The trio of gable windows sit atop a bracketed cornice and are interspersed with pilasters; a triangular central gable with a finial at its peak crowns them. Ira S. Bennett (1838-1881) was a lumber merchant native to Painted Post, New York who ascended the ranks of John McGraw & Co. before becoming manager of its North Tonawanda lumber yard and eventually, at the death of its titular founder, the sole owner of the company. Bennett also served for a time as Vice President of the Lumbermen's Association, an industry consortium. After Bennett's own death at the age of 42, only two years after this house was completed, his childless widow continued living there for a number of years.
