Description
English: As seen in December 2021, Buffalo's Irish Famine Memorial is found on the downtown lakeshore at the foot of La Rivière Drive, in the Waterfront Village office complex. It consists of a traditional granite "standing stone" imported to Buffalo from County Galway in Ireland, engraved with a verse from the Gospel of Luke written in Irish and surrounded consecutively by an empty well, a memorial field dotted with stones inscribed with the names of local Famine survivors, and a ring of thirty-two limestone boulders taken from Penrose Quay in Cork, Ireland that symbolize Ireland's thirty-two counties. It's a commemoration of the hardships of the so-called "Great Hunger" as well as the Irish-American immigrant experience that was dedicated in 1997 after a two-year planning process undertaken jointly by the Western New York Irish Famine Commemoration Committee, the Buffalo Arts Commission, the city and county governments, twenty-six Irish cultural organizations throughout the region, as well as the city of Cork.
