Is this my Daughter Ann |

Description |
English: Satire on fashion. A street where, before a house [on the right], over the door of which the name 'Love Joy' is written, a sedan chair has been brought, in order to carry away a young lady, who, in a towering toupée, and other articles of fashionable attire of this period, is leaving the house in company with a young soldier, who caresses her as they go; she looks fondly at him. An old woman, in what was then an 'old-fashioned' costume is interposing to prevent the departure of the damsel. 27 June 1774

Notes |
This is from a second plate of what was presumably a popular mezzotint. See J,5.104 for an impression of the other, and more information. The publication line is recorded in the Lennox-Boyd database, from an impression in his collection. Although it is not certain whether this is from the first or second plate, it is unlikely in any case that the publication line was altered. States (i) lettered with the title, six lines of verse in two columns: 'The Matron thus Supprised exclaims, ... Age envies Still the Joys of Youth' and S.H.Grimm Inv et delin // Watson sculp // Printed for S.Sledge, printseller in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, as the Act directs 27 June 1774' (ii) reworked state; a ruffle at the top of Anne's hair taken out and her whole hairdo reduced in height and width [2010,7081.1173] |

editThis image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
