Description
Français : Portrait d’Isabella d’Este par Titien c 1534-36. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienne (Autriche). N° inv GG83
English: Isabella d’Este, Titien c 1534-36. Isabella d'Este, daughter of the Duke of Ferrara and Modena, married Franceso I Gonzaga, Margrave of Mantua in 1490. As one of the female greatest art patrons in history, she tranformed the Mantuan court into a center of most eminent Renaissance scholars and artists. Isabella allowed Titien to paint her portait twice in the 1530's : at the real age of 60 - the picture is only preserved in a Rubens copy (Inv.- N. GG 1530) - and in the picture shown here, in which the subject is idealised as a much younger, elegant figure, and a fashion trend-setter. The eye colours light-gray is divergent to the other paintings (brown) and the identification is denied by Ozzola and Suida (two former Titian experts).
