האי היה מרכז יהודי חשוב מימי הקיסרות הרומית. הריכוז היהודי הגדול בעיר היה בשכונת טרנסטוורה, בקרבת אזור הנמל העתיק של האי. מאזור זה היה מעבר למרכז רומא היה דרך האי והאזור היה למרכז חיים יהודי. תולדות היהודים באי באו לידי ביטוי בה 2,000 שנה [1].

בשנת 1881 הוקם באי בית חולים יהודי עקב קרבתו של האי לאזור שהיה גטו רומא. המיוחד בבית חולים זה היה, מלבד האוכל הכשר, גם היעדר סמל הצלוב מעל לכל מיטת חולה. ליד הבית חולים היה גם מושב זקנים. בית החולים עבר לאזור אחר ברומא[2].

היום קיימת מרפאה במקום הנושאת את שם בית החולים : Ospedale Ebraico. בית חולים עצמו יחד עם בית האבות היהודי הועבר למקום אחר ברומא. במבנה בית-החולים לשעבר קיים גם בית כנסת הנושא את השם "TEMPIO DEI GIOVANI PANZIERI-FATUCCI" שבו מתפללים רק בשבתות ובחגים לפי נוסח ספרד המקובל בארץ ישראל.

במלאות יותר מיובל להקמת בית החולים הוצגה פעולתו של בית החולים תחת הכותרת: Medicina e Solidarieta Alla'Isola Tibertina 2005 .
