| Description |
English: Israel of God Church, 372 Fougeron Street at Genesee Street, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. Formerly a branch location of the Liberty Bank of Buffalo, the building was erected in 1932 and is contemporaneous with, yet architecturally quite different from, those designed for the company by the firm of Dietel & Wade: it's an example not of the Art Deco style but of the so-called "stripped Classicism" that was nearing the end of its zenith of popularity around the time of the bank's construction: its façade is dominated by an enormous arched window (now covered) crowned by an ancone-shaped keystone, with a projecting cornice and dentil row above. The bank closed in 1984, and the building has spent the ensuing years serving as home to a succession of religious congregations: first Temple of Truth, then beginning in 1996 as the Buffalo branch of The Israel of God, a majority African-American denomination of Christianity (though it describes itself as a "Bible study class") founded near Chicago in 1887 and now with 25 congregations in the United States, the UK and Zimbabwe. |
