| Description | Gaultheria shallon—salal. Salal is the Chinook language name for the species. The plant is found along the coast from Alaska to Santa Barbara county in California. Introduced into Europe where it has become a pest in disused pastures. These berries are edible, although not everyone finds them tasty.
