Clarkia franciscana—Presidio clarkia. The species is included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). It is listed by the State of California as Endangered and by the Federal Government as 'Endangered '. Clarkia franciscana grows only on serpentine-derived soils and is known from two populations in the Presidio of San Fancisco and three populations in Alameda County (probably the remnants of one larger population.) The species is threatened by all the dangers faced by any wild plant growing in an urban environment, although the San Francisco populations are on federally protected land while one of the three Alameda county populations grows in Redwood Regional Park. The species is self-pollinating and the population size varies from year-to-year, ranging from near-zero in some years to lush in other years.
