Description Scoliopus bigelovii—fetid adderstongue with carrion fly (family Calliphoridae.) "A neat woodland lily with two, broad, purple-mottled basal leaves and one to four leafless flowering stems. Both the leaves and flowering stems are 4-8 in. long. Each flowering stem bears a single, small, greenish flower with mottled and veined outer sepals and inner, wiry petals. The flowers have a carrion-like odor."—Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Native Plant Information Network. The carrion fly was photographed by serendipity. Note how the striations on the sepal mimic those of the fly's wing. Carrion flies are not the principal pollinators for this species, however, fungus gnats serve that purpose. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA..
