Summary edit

Description
English: Supplement page (revision and addenda) added in July 1944 to J.A.N. No. 1 UNIFORMS AND INSIGNIA, a publication prepared by the Military Intelligence Service and the Division of Naval Intelligence of the US War Departement as a recognition field manual for the American fighting forces during World War II:
  • Illustration plate/chart in colour showing the uniforms and insignia of the Kriegsmarine (Wehrmacht Kriegsmarine), the navy of Nazi Germany:
  • SPECIALTY INSIGNIA; PETTY OFFICERS 2nd AND 3rd CLASS AND SEAMEN.
Specialty Insignia are worn on upper left sleeve below Rating Insignia. The colors are red on blue uniform and overcoat, and cornflower blue on white uniform. These comprise the latest complete set available. It is possible that some of the Specialty Insignia previously illustrated in J.A.N. No. 1 (Feb. 1943) may still be worn.
  • RATING INSIGNIA: SEAMAN 1st CLASS, RESTRICTED IN GRADE-Upper left arm; SEAMAN NON-RESTRICTED-Upper left arm.
These men are beyond the point where they are eligible for promotion to PO and in consequence remain Seamen 1st Class with varying chevrons to indicate their periods of service. Old reserve seamen who have been called to active duty may be placed in this category.
The cumulative military manual was a Joint Army and Navy ("JAN") publication illustrating uniforms and insignia of the navies, armies and air forces of several countries. The collection of plates was published as a US Government unclassified public document 1943-44 in the format of a pocket-sized loose-leaf string-tied binder allowing for later additional pages and corrections. Today the manual is in the public domain without any known copyright restrictions.
