Napoléon Ier (1769-1821) est debout, en tenue de sacre.
Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) : est agenouillée. Elle reçoit la couronne des mains de son mari, et non du pape. Sa robe est décorée de soieries d'après des dessins de Jean-François Bony.
Maria Letizia Ramolino (1750-1836), mère de Napoléon, a été placée dans les tribunes par le peintre. En réalité, elle n'a pas assisté à la cérémonie pour protester de la brouille de Napoléon avec son frère Lucien. Maria Letizia demanda au peintre de lui attribuer une place d’honneur. En 1808, quand Napoléon découvrit la toile achevée dans l’atelier de David, il fut transporté, et dit toute sa gratitude au peintre qui avait su rendre hommage pour la postérité à l’affection qu’il portait à une femme qui partageait avec lui le fardeau de sa fonction.
Louis Bonaparte, (1778-1846) ; au début de l'empire, il reçut le titre de grand connétable. Roi de Hollande en 1806. Il épousa Hortense de Beauharnais, la fille de Joséphine.
Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844) : après le couronnement, il reçut le titre de prince impérial. Puis il fut roi de Naples en 1806 et d'Espagne en 1808.
Le jeune Napoléon-Charles (1802-1807), fils de Louis Bonaparte et d'Hortense de Beauharnais.
Charles-François Lebrun (1739-1824) : troisième consul aux côtés de Napoléon Bonaparte et de Cambacérès. Sous le Premier Empire, il occupe la place de prince-architrésorier. Il tient le sceptre.
Jean-Jacques-Régis Cambacérès, archi-chancelier de l'Empire (c'est lui qui a porté la main de justice pendant la cérémonie).
Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), ministre de la guerre sous le Consulat puis maréchal d'Empire, il portait le globe surmonté d'une croix pendant la cérémonie.
Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (1754-1836), grand chambellan, ministre des Relations extérieures, qui a porté une corbeille destinée à recevoir le manteau de l'empereur (David le représente coiffé d'un chapeau à plume, revêtu du manteau rouge de chambellan, orné de la grande plaque d'argent de Grand-Aigle de la Légion d'honneur décoration qu'il ne recevra que le 2 février 1805 !)
Joachim Murat (1767-1815) : maréchal d'empire, roi de Naples après 1808, beau-frère de Napoléon et époux de Caroline Bonaparte, tenant le coussin sur lequel se trouvait la couronne.
Le pape Pie VII (1742-1823), se contente de bénir le couronnement. Il est entouré par les dignitaires ecclésiastiques, nommés par Napoléon depuis le Concordat. Afin de ne pas compromettre le nouvel équilibre entre l’Église et l'État, le pape accepta bon gré mal gré d'assister au couronnement, ce que David représente clairement dans le tableau : on reconnaît quelques évêques à leurs mitres et, au premier plan, l’archevêque de Paris tenant une croix dans la main. Pie VII est à peine visible, assis sur son faldistoire derrière Napoléon, sa main droite esquissant un geste de bénédiction. Il ne porte ni mitre ni tiare, mais le pallium sur les épaules, cette bande de laine blanche brodée de six croix noires qui était l’un des attributs de la souveraineté des métropolites de l’Église romaine. C’est à cela qu’on l’identifie.

La couronne était à huit branches qui se réunissaient sous un globe d'or surmonté d'une croix. Les branches étaient garnies de diamants, quatre en forme de feuilles de palmier, et quatre en feuilles de myrte. Autour de la courbure régnait un cordon incrusté de huit émeraudes énormes. Le bandeau qui reposait sur le front étincelait d'améthystes. Le diadème était composé de quatre rangées de perles de la plus belle eau, entrelacées de feuillages en diamants parfaitemet asortis et montés avec un art aussi admirable que la richesse de la matière. Sur le front étaient plusieurs gros brillants, dont un seul pesait cent quarante-neuf grains. La ceinture enfin était un ruban d'or enrichi de trente neuf pierres roses. (Constant - Mémoires)
