Description

Figure holding a small deity at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Jadeite. Made between 500 and 900 BC in Mesoamerica by an Olmec artist.

This figurine represents the epitome of Olmec art. The identity of larger figure is uncertain, but may be an Olmec elite. The identity of the god is also unclear. It has a cleft head, jaguar's nose and upper lip, and the toothless mouth and chubby body of an infant. The deity may be the patron of rain, or maize, or both.

Jadeite was preferred by the Olmec for representing vegetation and water.
