English: An architectural elevation drawing of the Jaffe Building, once located at the southwest corner of 2nd Avenue and Madison Street. Designed by Spokane architect John K. Dow for Seattle and San Francisco developer Joseph Jaffe, what was built in 1914 was meant to be the first phase of an eventual 10-story skyscraper that never came to be. The corner of the building was designed for banking purposes and was rented to the National City Bank. The property, purchased by Jaffe from Cyrus Walker earlier in 1914, was the site of another aborted building project in 1890, meant to mirror the neighboring Burke Block, with only a 1 story building ever being built. In later years the Jaffe Building, renamed the Office Appliance Building in the 1930s, had lost all original architectural details and what was left was demolished in 1971 along with the entire block, making way for the current Henry M. Jackson federal building. |
