Description
English: Jagiellonian tapestry (The Confusion of Tongues from the series The Story of the Tower of Babel) of Sigismund II Augustus (King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania), manufactured in Brussels, Flanders, circa 1555–1560, exhibited in the Great Renaissance Hall of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius in 2023.
The textile, which foreshadows the dispersion of humanity, also has a dynamic composition. Three people, loading their belongings onto a boat, are preparing for their journey, while a caravan (in the background) has already set out. In the distance the incomplete Tower and the Almighty God showing himself from the heavens can be seen between the trees. The moment of chaos and mutual misunderstanding is illustrated by two men (in the foreground on the right), one of whom, unable to communicate with the other, flees in panic.
