Im Zuge der kürzlich erfolgten Restaurierung konnte das im Hintergrund auslaufende Schlachtschiff anhand der Beflaggung als russische Fregatte identifiziert werden. Admiral Orlow hielt sich 1771, ein Jahr nach seinem Sieg über die Türken in der Seeschlacht von Chesme, mit seiner Flotte in Livorno auf. Zarin Katharina und Orlow wollten diesen triumphalen Sieg über das osmanische Reich propagandistisch dargestellt wissen und beauftragten Hackert mit einer Darstellung der Schlacht und mit weiteren Ansichten der Flotte und des Hafens Livorno. Dieser Großauftrag stellte einen Meilenstein in Hackerts Karriere dar und begründete seinen internationalen Ruhm. Hackert stellte als Bedingung, nach Livorno reisen zu können, um die Details möglichst genau anhand der dort ankernden Flotte studieren zu können. Da er noch nie ein explodierendes Schiff gesehen hatte, belud man eine ausgediente Fregatte mit Pulver und jagte sie vor Livorno in die Luft. Offenbar konnte Hackert nicht alle Aufträge Orlows alleine bewältigen. J. H. W. Tischbein schrieb: “Als Philipp Hackert für den Admiral Orlow so viel zu tun hatte und unter anderem den Hafen von Livorno malte, ließ er sich von Wutki (Michael Wuttky) helfen, welcher die Figuren geschickt malte...” (zit. nach Nordhoff, Bd. II, S. 29). Das vorliegende Gemälde ist mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit in Orlows Auftrag entstanden. Dann wäre die größere Fassung dieser Komposition mit anderer Staffage, ehemals in Schloss Pavlovsk, eine spätere Fassung. Weitere Varianten wurden 1979 bei Lempertz, Köln, versteigert, bzw. befanden sich bis 2005 in der Sammlung Schäfer, Schweinfurt. Johann Philipp Hackert begann seine künstlerische Laufbahn in der Werkstatt seines Vaters Philipp Hackert. Ab 1758 besuchte er die Berliner Akademie, wo er erstmals 1761 mit zwei Veduten auf sich aufmerksam machte. In Baron Olthoff fand Hackert einen Gönner, der ihn nach Rügen einlud, wo er Wandmalereien im Gutshaus Boldevitz ausführte. 1765 bis 1768 hielt Hackert sich in Paris auf. Dort prägten ihn der Landschafts- und Marinemaler Claude Joseph Vernet und der Kupferstecher Johann Georg Wille. 1768 ging Hackert nach Italien, wo er in Rom und Neapel in Kontakt zu den Kunstmäzenen Johann Friedrich Reiffenstein und Sir William Hamilton trat. Schnell schuf er sich einen Ruf als bedeutender Landschaftsmaler. 1768 wurde er Hofmaler König Ferdinands IV. von Neapel. Im selben Jahr traf er mit Johann Wolfgang von Goethe zusammen, der ihn schätzte und bei ihm Zeichenunterricht nahm. Nach Hackerts Tod verfasste Goethe eine biographische Skizze über ihn. Hackert war der bedeutendste Landschaftsmaler des Klassizismus und ein europaweit bekannter Künstler.
