Summary edit

Description

This is one of the newer articulated buses that the government run Jamaican Urban Transit company(JUTC) has running. It probably arrived on the island no more than 2 years ago.

The JUTC's purchasing history is interesting. Earlier in the decade the company purchased a number of Torino city buses from Brazil's Marcopolo SA(the largest bus company in South America and one of the biggest in the world). About 200 of these are still in service on the island. 150 of these were sent back to Brazil late in 2010 to be refurbished.

In the late 90's, however, the Jamaican government began an interesting relationship with Belgium that created many more business dealings between the two countries. The JUTC bought a couple hundred coaches from the Belgian VDL Jonckheere in the early 2000's, all Volvos(one of these earlier buses can be seen in my photostream).

In more recent years the Belgian government has floated a number of loans to Jamaica to allow for some of this trade, and in 2008 these loans funded the purchase of 100 Jonckheere coaches. In late 2009, new loans guaranteed the purchase of 200 additional buses from Belgium, all of which were on the island by November 2010. During my time on the island, I did glimpse what I thought was a new MarcoPolo Gran Viale, indicating that the JUTC is still buying a few Brazilian buses as well, but I can't confirm this online.
