Frontispiece engraving of James Aitken, commonly called John Aitken and John the Painter, 1777. JCB Archive of Early American Images, The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. Note: An impassioned supporter of the American Revolution, James Aitken, also known by other names, wished to attack the British Navy by burning down royal navy yards in Portsmouth and Bristol. He was eventually captured and executed for his terrorist activities.
