English: James Hammett Memorial - Tolpuddle Churchyard James Hammett was one of the six Tolpuddle Martyrs, and the only one who returned to the village to end his days. Above the inscription is the date 1834, the year of the Martyrs conviction for the swearing of illegal oaths. The inscription reads: 'James Hammett Tolpuddle Martyr, Pioneer of Trades Unionism, Champion of Freedom. Born 11 December 1811, Died 21 November 1891.' The memorial is by Eric Gill, erected in 1934 to mark the centenary of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. It is Grade II Listed on account of its importance in the history of the Trade Union movement. |
