Just arrived (July 18, 2014) at NASA Goddard! This is the STTARS - Space Telescope Transporter for Air Road and Sea. Inside is the test, or pathfinder, backplane. The backplane is the spine of the telescope, the structure that will support the primary mirror segments. The pathfinder will be unpacked into the cleanroom soon. Over the next few months, we will install 2 spare primary mirror segments and the spare secondary onto the pathfinder. It will then be shipped to Johnson Space Center to test Chamber A.
