Notes
Nederlands: Een variatie op het vanitas thema: de schilderkunst zelf, die niet de eeuwige werkelijkheid weergeeft maar slechts een tijdgebonden imitatie, wordt hier een vanitas-symbool net als de schedel en de kaarsen. De nieuwe toeschrijving aan Molenaer is door F. Meyer (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie). Vroeger werd het stuk toegeschreven aan Hendrik Pot. De twee schedels op de voorgrond waren overschilderd en kwamen aan het licht na een restauratie in 2001.
