English: A Japanese Aichi D3A dive bomber (Allied reporting code: "Val") under fire from the U.S. Navy battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57) during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, 26 October 1942. South Dakota's gunners claimed to have shot down 26 Japanese aircraft, but only 13 had actually been shot down by all of the ships of Task Force 16 combined.
