Description
English: This image depicts three Japanese sailors probably on board the Japanese naval training vessel TAISEI MARU. The four-masted steel barque was built in 1904 by Kawasaki Dockyard Company for the Japanese Imperial Government in Kobe, Japan. In December 1906, 'The Sydney Morning Herald' reported that 'the pioneer vessel of the Imperial Nautical College of Tokyo' had arrived in Sydney. The ship was moored in Woolloomooloo Bay and opened for inspection by the public. The vessel visited Australia again in 1911, 1913, 1926 and 1934.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
