English: Jean Van de Velde was here The Barry Burn at the 18th hole, Carnoustie. Scene of the famous finish to the 1999 Open where Jean Van de Velde, with a 3 shot lead on the last hole, found the grandstand, the burn and sand to only end up with a play off place. He played a shot from in the burn - taking a drop would have probably won the claret jug. Sometimes the loser is better remembered.
A few days before my visit, the burn flooded some of the town and links. Rifle fire could be heard from the army ranges, the other side of the course. |
