English: A family plot in section 75 of Mount Olivet Cemetry in Washington, D.C., in the United States in 2014.
The graves have been decorated by the families with a variety of mementos, including plastic and silk flowers, American flags, candles, toys, and decorated rocks. The placement of rocks on headstones is Jewish funeral practice, but has spread to a wide range of religious communities of many faiths as well as non-religious individuals. The placement of decorative, playful, or other items on graves was an African American funerary practice. Because poor African Americans could not afford luxurious funeral monuments, inexpensive decorative items were often placed on graves instead. This practice is no longer confined to the African American community, and is especially practiced by families decorating a child's grave. |
