Pioneer of the free-spirited New York loft jazz scene performing at the Bimhuis for the first time, with a band featuring among others avant-jazz pianist Matthew Shipp. Jemeel Moondoc is a musician in the free-spirited tradition of Cecil Taylor, with whom he has studied. As an alto saxophonist he has been compared to Ornette Coleman and Jimmy Lyons, because of his gripping and extroverted style of playing. As a composer he considers the individual qualities of his band members, as did Mingus and Ellington. He regularly performs as an orchestra leader using conduction as a technique. His current quartet features leading avant-jazz pianist Matthew Shipp. Jemeel Moondoc appeared in the late 1970s in the New York loft jazz scene, where old industrial spaces were used as alternative concert venues. Ever since then he has collaborated with bassist William Parker, key figure in international avant-jazz. Moondoc inherited his name from one of his ancestors, a so-called ‘moondoctor’, or medicine man. Jemeel Moondoc - altsax Hilliard Greene - bas Newman Taylor Baker - drums Matthew Shipp - piano |
