editDescriptionJesmond St George on 3 May 2023 (97).JPG |
Detail of the baptismal font, sculpted by Robert Beall (d.1892), who was working under his then company name of Emley & Co., to the design of architect Tomas Ralph Spence (1845–1918). It is in St George's Church, Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England. It was installed in the church in 1888. This is a large, square font with a bowl made of a solid block of onyx. The heavy bowl is set on a decorative marble frame, which itself rests on columns of rouge jasper. The columns stand on a base of alabaster. The font once had a wrought-iron cover, now gone. Showing the frame, columns and base together. |
