Summary edit

Description
English: The Jesse R. Porter House, 94 Russell Street at Summit Avenue, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. Built in 1892 and a contributing property to the Parkside East Historic District, the house represents an interesting hybridization of the Colonial Revival and Queen Anne styles of architecture that were both en vogue at the time of its construction: the three-story octagonal projecting tower on the southwest side of the house (the top floor and roof of which were reconstructed in 2014 after earlier being removed) afford the floor plan the asymmetry required of the latter style, while the abundance of Classical detailing that once adorned the façade (much of which has been lost to subsequent renovations; for instance, the twin bay windows facing Russell Avenue once sported engaged Doric plasters separating the panes) represent the latter. The house's initial resident and probable designer was Jesse R. Porter (1862-1928), an architect who, at the time of the house's construction, had just left the employ of his father Cyrus K. Porter to co-found the firm of Porter & Schugens; however, that company was defunct by 1897 and he returned to his former post at his father's company. The younger Porter sold this house in 1919 and moved to the suburb of Kenmore.
