English: Jetty at Peel From St Patrick's Isle looking along the jetty to the coastline stretching away to the north-east.
Traditionally a fishing port with a huge herring fleet. By the 1880s, fishing employed about 3,000 men and boys, with ancillary businesses such as shipbuilding providing employment to hundreds more. Peel remains the most active fishing port on the Isle of Man but it is also important commercially for the importation of various fuel oils. Peel also has a comprehensive fish and shellfish processing industry and is home to the traditional art of kipper curing with guided tours organised for visitors. http://www.peelonline.net/leece/photos.htm (see 'Landing Herring at Peel' for an impression of the herring fleet) |
