Bevisligen samtida originalporträtt framställande Johan III känner man ej, vare sig i olja eller gravyr, såvida ej just det här afbildade kopparsticket, eller åtminstone urtypen för den derå befintliga bröstbilden, möjligen får anses vara tillkommen under konungens lifstid. Det företer en alldeles omiskänlig iikhet med den profilbild af honom, som förekommer å den af Hieronymus Nützel graverade bilden af konung Johans likprocession m. m. samt en annan, outgifven gravyr af samme gravör, tillhörande ett blad med bilder af Gustaf I, Erik, Johan, Sigismund och Carl, sannolikt afsedt till titelblad. Man kan till och med på förstnämnda bild finna ett

ungdomligare drag, men då Nützel sannolikt ej befann sig i Sverige förrän samma år Johan dog, 1592, får man antaga, att denna bild måhända, äfven den, såsom ofta skedde vid denna tid, är graverad efter mynt- eller medaljtyper, hvilkas likhet med originalet med allt skäl kan betviflas. En annan möjlighet är dock att Nützel till sitt förfogande haft att tillgå äldre bilder af Johan, ty det torde vara höjdt öfver allt tvifvel, att den konstälskande fursten endera i Sverige eller exempelvis under sina olika resor i utlandet låtit “föreviga“ sina anletsdrag. Här funnos i öfrigt under Johans tid flere skicklige konstnärer, som äfven gjorde “conterfei“; sådana äro: Anders målare, Lambrecht målare, Willem Boy, Johan Baptista van Uther m. fl.
