Johann Caspar Bosshardt (* 1823 ; † 1887) malte in seinem Werk «Waldmanns Abschied» den Todgeweihten mit Bürgermeisterkette: Der im Mittelpunkt stehende Waldmann erteilt seinen Mitgefangenen den Segen. Sein Gesichtsausdruck ist wie der eines Märtyrers gefasst, und im nächsten Augenblick wird er erhobenen Hauptes zum Schafott schreiten ... Als charakterisch für Historienmalerei gilt, dass sie vermeintlich geschichtliche Augenblicke wie Theaterszenen festhielt (Bosshardt benutzte ein 1814 erschienenes Schauspiel als Grundlage für seine Bildkomposition).
