Johann Wilhelm stammte aus Bezau im Bregenzer Wald und ließ sich später in Frankfurt/Main als Bürger nieder. Sein zweibändiges Werk Architectura civilis erreichte mehrere Auflagen und bildete bis in die zweite Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts ein Standardwerk für die Holzbaukunst
English: Carpenters at work. Illustration from Johann Wilhelm's Architectura civilis, Frankfurt / Main, 1668. Johann Wilhelm came from Bezau in the Bregenz Forest and later settled in Frankfurt, Germany. His two-volume work, Architectura civilis reached several editions and made up in the second half of the 18th Century, a standard work for wooden architecture. The carpenters tools include rule, two man saw, broad axe, auger, ink line, framing square, and ladder.
