DescriptionJohn -Thach F4F3 cockpit.jpg	English: U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander John Smith Thach, photographed in the cockpit of a Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter on 10 April 1942, while commanding Fighting Squadron 3 (VF-3). The Japanese flags on the plane commemorate "kills" Thach made while flying from the aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2) on 20 February 1942. In late May 1942, VF-3 was assigned to the USS Yorktown (CV-5) and fought at the Battle of Midway.
