English: Major John A. Harman, originally from Staunton, Virginia, graduated from West Point in 1887. He was in the Cavalry at Fort Keogh, MT, then Fort Riley, KS. He taught at Virginia Tech, then was in the Spanish-American War. In the culmination of his career, he traveled to Ecuador under the request of his brother, Archer Harman, and Ecuador's president Eloy Alfaro, and was Chief Engineer of the Guayaquil & Quito (G&Q) Railway in Ecuador, from 1899 until his death in 1907. He was buried by the side of the railroad he helped to build, in Huigra, Ecuador. |
