Description
English: John Knox statue, Old Town Cemetery The Protestant Reformer John Knox in a rather sorry state, having lost his right hand and a bit of his nose. The bible he should be holding aloft (Scotland's answer to the torch of liberty?) has gone. I am told that poor old John has been given a pasting by some young local adherents of the 'auld religion' to whom he is still a provocative figure - which only goes to show that the fanatical passions aroused in the 16th and 17th centuries resonate even today in parts of Scottish society. Mind you, I have a feeling the kids would have left him alone, had the artistic quality of the statue by Alexander Handyside Ritchie been more impressive.
