Description
English: The John Long House, 4760 Goodrich Road, Clarence, New York, September 2020. Inscribed as an official landmark by the Historic Preservation Commission as an example of the Federal style of architecture that comes imbued with a strong Pennsylvania Dutch influence, the Long House sports a side-gabled roof, a clapboard façade four bays in width, and - most interestingly - a front entrance bedecked with interesting Classical ornamentation, namely a pair of fluted pilaster strips on the side and a lintel with decorative keystone atop. Inside the cut stone foundation is embedded a large basement cooking hearth. The house dates to the 1830s and was originally the home of John Long, a man who is said to have been one of the town's earliest settlers, but about whom little specific information is forthcoming. By 1850 it had passed into the hands of Hugh S. Long (1809-1881), presumably a son, who lived there until his death.
