Published by the Associated Cartoon Service. Artwork by Edwin F. Brotze.John Stewart Brace (1861-1918) was born in Canada of English descent. His father, a lumberman, moved the family to Spokane in 1883 to pursue work. John followed his father into the lumber business. He moved to Seattle in 1888, and was elected to the city council in 1892. In 1899, in partnership with Frank Hergert, he purchased the Western Mills and founded the Brace & Hergert Mill Company. He was also responsible for the construction of the Lake Washington canal. He was married to Kate Frankland with whom he had five children. |
