Note about Joseph J. Kupke edit
Joseph J. Kupke (1896-1955) was owner of Kem Lighter Manufacturing Co. of Algonac, Michigan. He was born in Cleveland and came to Detroit in 1933. His plant made cigarette lighters, but during World War II it manufactured bullets. His plant was in Detroit until 1949, when he moved it to Algonac, Michigan. In that same year he bought Star Island at the foot of Harsens Island at the mouth of the St. Clair River. Kupke built his house and two guest houses on his island and a boat house to accommodate his 42-foot cruiser. His guests on the island included Pat O'Brien, James Cagney, the Cisco Kid, Spencer Tracy and many others. His friend Harry G. Garland (1899-1972) would visit Kupke by seaplane, docking across the street at the home of Jack (1893-1968) and Dorothy Beamish (located at 8784 S. Channel Dr.) Kupke died in 1955.[1]
