Description

Bronze figurines depicted in celebration, created in Egypt about 715 to 332 BC. Found in Egypt, but the location is not clear.

Animals depicted various gods, depending on the context in which they were used. The left figurine is probably that of the falcon-headed god Qebehsenuef (or Horus of Pe), son of the god Horus and symbol of Lower Egypt. The right figurine is probably the jackal-headed god Duamutef (or Horus of Nekhen), a son of the god Horus and symbol of Upper Egypt.

Nekhen was the Upper Egyptian city which was the center of worship of Horus. Nekhen was the mythic city where the pharaohs were thought to have originated. Pe was a town in Lower Egypt. The sun-god Ra gave the town to Horus after his eye was injured in the struggle for the throne of Egypt. Qebehsenuef and Duamutef were the "souls" of these two ancient cities.

The pharaoh in the center has not been identified. Kneeling on one knee, one fist over the heart and the other raised above the head, was a classic Egyptian depiction of celebration.
