Description

International Development Secretary, Justine Greening, meets with young women from Malawi and Pakistan, members of the Plan UK Global Youth Speakers Network, in the House of Commons, 26 June 2013.

The NGO Plan UK has established the Global Youth Speakers Network, which is made up of young people from Sierra Leone, Pakistan, and Malawi, with support from the Department for International Development. The girls are engaged in advocacy projects with Plan at their local and district level, and supported to take this advocacy work to a national and international level.

The girls- Alinane, Mary, Laraib and Farheea - were selected from across their countries by their peers to act as voices for their communities on the international stage, and are in London this week to attend the Commonwealth High Level Event on ending child marriage, which is being held at Canada House on June 26th.

Ahead of the event, the Secretary of State talked to the girls about the first-hand the issues that affect them and their peers. In particular, the impacts of child marriage, and the UK's commitment to end the practice. The girls offered their perspectives - from both rural and urban settings, and in an African and Asian setting - on what works to ensure they and their peers can choose if, when, and who to marry.
