Description |
English: Portrait of Gian Carlo de' Medici (1611-1663), son of Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621). "The present painting relates to the portrait of Giovan Carlo de’ Medici by Justus Sustermans in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi, Lucca (inv. no. 98). Giovan Carlo de’ Medici was born in 1611 and he was the second son of Cosimo II (1590-1621) and Maria Magdalena of Austria. He received the Cardinal’s purple from Pope Innocenzo X (1574-1655) on the 14th November 1644. Giovan Carlo was a great lover of the culture and the art and he was one of the biggest collectors of his time; many of his paintings and sculptures were sold after his death, in 1633, to settle his debts (see S. Mascalchi, Giovan Carlo de’ Medici, an outstanding but neglected collector in seventeenth century Florence, in: Apollo, 1984, n. 120, pp. 268-272)." [1] |
